How bad is it? It's a mediocre adaptation of manga.
Should you see it? If you're a 9 year-old boy, or think like one.
On his 18th birthday, a boy is given a magical Dragonball by his grandfather. Legend has it that anyone who possesses all seven of them is granted "one perfect wish" and the evil King Piccolo is seeking them. There's no explanation of some plot points, which probably would make sense to those familiar with the original manga source. The story is hackneyed and full of cliches. The casting is weird, with Justin Chatwin, Emmy Rossum and Ernie Hudson (!) in a story of the Orient. Chow Yun-Fat undoes all of the good will he created in his earlier films. The film is fast-paced and has plenty of action scenes and that might be enough for the undiscerning viewer.
